The 228 MW activity, currently under construction in Chile’s Atacama Region, features stationary, utility-scale lithium-ion battery units designed for grid application in northern Chile. It will capture excess daytime solar generation – reducing curtailment – and deliver renewable electricity during peak nighttime demand, helping displace fossil-fuel-based energy generation while strengthening the flexibility and stability of the National Electric System.

Chile’s long-term planning makes clear that the phased retirement of coal-fired power plants is central to achieving its NDCs – so long as the essential system services those plants provide can be replaced by other solutions, including BESS. Recognising this, the Article 6 committee led by the Ministry of the Environment concluded that BESS is critical and that carbon finance plays a key role during the early adoption phase. Carbon revenues from the KliK Foundation will make this activity financially viable.

"I am convinced that BESS in Chile will help to overcome issues related to the national electricity system, including lowering curtailment of renewables and displacing fossil plants, over time. Colbún and the carbon consultant Sherpas Group did outstanding work in developing the methodology and in clearly conveying the specific context of Chile’s electricity system. The implementation of DAS BESS will contribute significantly to Chile’s energy transition."

Joachim Sell, Director of Carbon Procurement, KliK Foundation

"We have had to demonstrate that our project meets demanding global standards, competing with initiatives from around the world. Being part of this process alongside KliK, which represents Switzerland’s efforts to meet its emissions reduction commitments, is a highly significant opportunity. This type of long-term contract helps to strengthen the development of initiatives that still face regulatory and technological uncertainties. It is a concrete sign that the energy transition requires international collaboration and innovative solutions."

José Ignacio Escobar, CEO Colbún

"Without the constructive collaboration of Colbún, Sherpas, the KliK Foundation, and the relevant authorities in Chile and Switzerland throughout the process, the development of this Article 6 activity would not have been possible. The continuous dialogue was essential for clarifying methodological questions, credibly demonstrating additionality, and successfully advancing the activity. I am delighted that, with the authorisation now in place, the activity will be implemented with the support of the KliK Foundation."
