The KliK Foundation presents its financing mechanism in Morocco
The main objective of the four-day visit was to present the opportunities for the Moroccan private sector to access carbon finance and to inform representatives of public institutions about the details of the Article 6 mechanism of the Paris Agreement. This included a full-time workshop jointly organised by MTEDD, the Swiss Embassy, the Swiss Chamber of Commerce (CCSM) and the Confédération Générale des Entreprises du Maroc (CGEM).

During the workshop, Jacqueline Jakob, Director International Relations at the KliK Foundation, highlighted the need for timely action to maximise the benefits of carbon revenues before the cut-off date at the end of 2030.

Yannick Träris, Carbon Procurement Manager at the KliK Foundation, emphasised the importance of identifying early-movers who are willing to seize the opportunity and lead by example to attract other private sector actors.

Due to already existing decarbonisation initiatives and a vibrant network of companies, the Moroccan business sector appears well positioned to implement greenhouse gas mitigation programmes within the framework of Article 6 (A6). The KliK Foundation is therefore calling on the Moroccan private sector to consider using the innovative financial support facility of A6 by selling the resulting carbon credits of their mitigation programmes to accelerate the country’s decarbonisation.

Based on Morocco’s NDC, the KliK Foundation has identified seven major areas that are additional to Morocco’s own mitigation actions and have the potential to generate ITMOs (Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes) that can be transferred to Switzerland. These include the following areas:

1. Solar PV

2. Renewable energy: battery solutions, solar water irrigation

3. eMobility: eBus routes between and within cities, conversion of vehicle fleets (e.g., last-mile delivery)

4. Fossil-fuel replacement in industry: valorisation of biomass, electrification, RDF, replacement of gensets/boilers

5. Green cooling: replacement of ACs with green ACs, with higher EE and climate-friendly refrigerants

6. Methane avoidance: composting, wastewater treatment, biogas production, LFG to energy, manure management

7. Cement: RDF, LC3
