From 5 October 2020 to 10 January 2021, the KliK Foundation carried out its third call for projects for the acquisition of international certificates, or so-called Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes (ITMOs).

Once again, the programme proposals were primarily for Africa (11), with fewer for Asia (3) and Latin America (1). The quality of the proposals was outstanding and reflects the learning curve in relation to the countries participating in collaborations under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Of the four programmes selected, one is based in Malawi (energy-efficient cooking stoves) and three in Ghana (energy-efficient cooking stoves, biomass energy and waste management). In Ghana the “National Clean Energy Programme”is already in development. Together with the other three, this makes a total of four programmes that are currently being developed in Ghana. On 22 November 2020, Ghana signed a bilateral agreement with Switzerland for collaboration within the framework of the Paris Agreement. This forms the basis for the collaboration and support by the KliK Foundation.

Peru as forerunner – Regulatory foundations in preparation

Like Ghana, Peru has also signed such an agreement with Switzerland. Peru is currently establishing the regulatory foundations for the registration and review of climate protection projects in the country. The KliK Foundation will commence operations for the acquisition of ITMOs via its Peru platform from the second half of this year: www.peru.klik.ch.

The portfolio is growing

With the third call for projects there are now a total of 21 projects that have been selected for further development, of which 6 (in Peru, Ghana, Senegal and Morocco) are already being developed. Over 20 activities are being revised by the applicants for resubmission.

Further calls for projects

Further calls for projects are planned for this year. More information on this will be published in the International Newsletter at a later date.

Background to the statutory obligation

It is anticipated that, within the framework of the Paris Agreement, the KliK Foundation will be subject to a statutory obligation from 2022 to acquire certified reductions of greenhouse gas emissions, so-called “Internationally Transferred Mitigation Outcomes” (ITMOs). In order to further increase this ambition, Switzerland has pledged to limit its domestic emissions to a maximum of 70% of the level of 1990 as well as to reduce greenhouse gases abroad by up to 20% of the 1990 Swiss emissions level by the year 2030. In the period between 2021 and 2030, KliK must procure a total of some 40 million ITMOs, each of which represents a reduction of one tonne of CO₂ emissions.
