We operationalise Article 6

In the forefront of the adoption of a Paris Rulebook at the Climate Change Conference in Glasgow in 2021 (COP26), the KliK Foundation had embarked developing the concepts and prerequisites to live collaboration under Article 6 and continues to shape the implementation.

Ensure Environmental Integrity

While the Paris Rulebook is paramount to ensure common principles, collaboration is governed by national regulations and the cooperation agreement between Switzerland and partner countries. The engaging parties commit to corresponding adjustments upon ITMO transfers, as well as the adherence to safeguards set up by the signatories to the San Jose Principles.

Synergise ambition

By design, the KliK activities add to unconditional targets pledged by transferring countries as NDCs. These activities therefore may enhance the ambition by both parties, avoiding the risk for overselling for the transferring country.

Foster regulatory capacity

Devising mitigation activities requires sovereign decisions. Besides methodological questions political considerations about the appropriate scope of the activity are crucial. Climate change is a cross-cutting topic that requires integration of a variety of perspectives. By embarking for activities under Article 6 the regulator is prompted to employ competent committees or authorities to take on decisions and processes that guide the activities to its appropriate scope.

Access additional options

Through activities implemented under the above principles host countries access new options and increase their room for manoeuvre. Under Article 6 collaboration is voluntary and the parties remain sovereign to ensure they seize opportunities.
