The KliK Foundation is a pioneer spearheading the development of mitigation activities that eventually will generate ITMOs. Obliged by the Swiss law, it is set out to procure ITMOs governed by bilateral agreements. Today it already funds the development of eleven activities in different countries. Over the past two years all involved parties had relevant and concrete learnings in this process, that may inform negotiations, research and replication alike.
Specifically, the following questions were deliberated on the basis of the concrete case
How are the concerns regarding environmental integrity considered under bilateral agreements?
What are the prerequisite political and administrative capacities for countries to engage meaningfully in Article 6?
How to manage ownership and legal title under the setting of the Paris Agreement? How to structure transactions under Article 6.2?
How to avoid the risk of overselling, i.e. ensuring the cheap mitigation options are not sold, but realised domestically to contribute towards countries’ own Paris pledges?
